Member of the London Mathematical Society. Secretary of the British Computer Society Specialist Group on Expert Systems (1991-1996) and committee member of the Specialist Group in Object Oriented Programming and Systems. Chairman of the Leonardo Users Group (1989-1991).

Member of the editorial boards of the international journals Expert Systems and Fuzzy Sets and Systems (1986-1998). Has served on the programme committees of a number of international conferences including SCOOP, AIS, AIEng, OOIS, ES9x (Programme chair 1991, Applications chair 1993), Object Expo Europe (Technical chair 1994 and 1995), TOOLS Europe (Programme co-chair 1995 and 1996, Tutorials chair 2001) and others. Referee for several journals including Expert Systems, Journal of Approximate Reasoning, Journal of Theoretical Politics and Fuzzy Sets and Systems. Editorial board of Knowledge Based Systems Management Review 1990-91.
